Tax collection along highways banned

Dimapur, May 13 (MExN): The Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, Maongwati Aier, has directed all unions and associations functioning along the national and state highways to cease their tax collection activities. The district Police had, since May 2008, been implementing the order by the Home department banning all Unions/Associations from collecting tax/fee along the National Highway and the State Highway. However, it was informed, the High Court had stayed the order “in respect of Petroleum & Land Transport Workers Federation of India and the Dimapur Motor Workers & Trade Union”, and directed them to file to the Home Commissioner within one month’s time for review.

In view of this, the DC had then directed the two unions to function their office away from the State and National Highway till the order was reviewed by the Home department. Reiterating on the Home department’s order issued on May 2008, the Deputy Commissioner has again directed all unions and associations to “immediately stop functioning of its office and collections from the National Highway and State Highway”. Violators of this order, the DC warned, will be arrested and prosecuted as per the law.
