The Depart of Taxes is held to be one of the best performing government departments in Nagaland, today. According to Kudecho Khamo, MLA and Advisor for Taxes and CAWD, the Department accounts for 85 percent of the state’s Own Tax revenue.

Nevertheless, he said that the Department has room for further improvement not only in terms of achieving revenue targets, but also in terms of instilling honesty and enforcing proper tax compliance.

Khamo made the comment at a GST Refresher Training cum Stakeholders’ Meet, which concluded on October 25. The 2-day training event was organised by the Department of Taxes in partnership with the Goods & Services Tax Network (GSTN), New Delhi, at the Niathu Resort, Chümoukedima. Deputy Chief Minister, TR Zeliang, was the chief guest at the closing function held on Friday evening.

Khamo further said that the Department has become the first state in the northeast to successfully implement AADHAR based biometric authentication for registration, and is trying to make online payment of Professional Tax less cumbersome.  He also placed emphasis on educating, sensitising and updating taxpayers at regular intervals to ensure that “taxpayers are well protected and conduct their businesses efficiently.”

As per official figures, the Department’s total revenue collection stood at over Rs 1200 cr in 2022-23.

The Deputy Chief Minister, TR Zeliang, recalled the initial opposition to the GST when it was introduced in 2017.  While the attitude towards GST has changed for the better and boosting the state’s revenue, he said that there many are still unaware of the GST working system.

In this regard, he called for holding awareness programmes regularly, particularly in a rapidly evolving digital environment. He stressed the crucial role of Input Tax Credit (ITC) in managing business finances and highlighted the need for accurate documentation, while widening the tax base, preventing tax evasion and utilising regulations to strengthen revenue collection.
