DIMAPUR, Oct 3 (mexn): The Chairman of the Dimapur Municipal Council Y. Vikheho Awomi has announced that the entire Taxi Stand at ISBT complex, near Purana bazar and other unauthorized taxi parking within the town is to be shifted to the new Parking behind Town Hall by mid-October. The DMC Chairman said that in a bid to tackle the menace of overcrowded markets and congestion of traffic in the commercial centre of Nagaland, the civic body has brought forward a contingency plan which is to be implemented by the middle of this month. Traffic Police and District Administration have been apprised of the same. The Development Authority of Nagaland (DAN) had earlier agreed to lease out the parking area to the DMC, informed Awomi while addressing media persons at his office today.
Further, the DMC is planning to acquire the ISBT and ISTT in order to curb traffic congestion and in the interest of the general public, Awomi said. “The Council has also approached the State Government to lease out the ISBT and ISTT to the Dimapur Municipal Council for which the Government is giving a serious thought to the proposal, as it is the need of the hour,” he added.
On the taxi parking system in Dimapur, Awomi said, “Though the Government had shifted the Taxi Parking to the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT), the taxi drivers are seen all over the town in search of passengers. The Government’s noble move to shift the Taxi Parking to ISBT did not seem to be viable as the place is too far away from the main town area thereby causing inconvenience to the passengers to travel further, especially those traveling by air or rail”, Awomi said.
The Chairman informed that DMC had approached the DAN to lease out the weekly Wednesday Bazaar at Supermarket Complex to DMC so that the same may be converted into a daily market to reduce the problem of overcrowding and make shopping a pleasant experience. The DAN has agreed to lease out the same to DMC, Awomi said. As such, the DMC has decided to ban footpath/roadside trading. All footpath/roadside vendors are to set up shop at the Supermarket area.
