At least 10 women street-vendors from Dimapur were provided zero-interest loans by the Entrepreneurs Associates (tEA) during a one day sensitization program, “Uplifting Women Street Vendors,” held at the Tourist Lodge, Dimapur on June 1.

The event was organised by tEA in collaboration with Caring Friends, from Mumbai and was the first of its kind to be held in Dimapur since the program began in the year 2017. With over 40 women participants in attendance, the primary objective of the programme was to sensitize women regarding the various schemes and services for the upliftment of their businesses.

Guest speaker, Ganesh Sharma, Superintendent of Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), briefly mentioned about the various schemes and services available for women street vendors. This included the PM SVANidhi Scheme for facilitating working capital loans up-to Rs 10,000, Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (zero bank balance) and the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

He also stressed on the significance of the informal sector which contributed more than half of the revenue in the country. Furthermore, he encouraged the women participants to become entrepreneurs who were financially independent and gave assurances that the DMC will provide them with any necessary assistance.

Sekulu Nyekha, Head of Feminist Future India meanwhile elaborated on women’s physical wellbeing particularly in regard to the menstrual health and hygiene.

A noteworthy segment of the programme was the words of encouragement by Temjenlemla Phom, an active beneficiary of tEA who shared her positive experience with tEA and encouraging other participants to get connected with tEA in the days to come.
