Teacher shortage at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Aghunato, has forced an administrative officer to step in and take on the role of an English teacher. The school's struggles stem from a lack of subject teachers, particularly in English, following retirements and promotions in recent years.

Despite the school’s continued strong enrollment—112 students in Classes 6-10 and 49 students in Class 12—the shortage of qualified educators has created a crisis. In response, Kathyinla, the Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) of Aghunato Subdivision, has voluntarily taken up English classes for High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) students.

"Regarding my decision to volunteer to teach, it all started during a visit to the school. In the course of my interaction with the Vice Principal, I was deeply saddened to learn that the only Govt. higher secondary school in Aghunato is without an English teacher. Hence, I offered to teach before office hours," Kathyinla said.

She further explained that her initiative was not about gaining publicity but ensuring that students receive the education they deserve. "The intention was not publicity but a small way to let the students know that they are cared for. I am certain that any officer in my place would have done the same. It so happens that I was working as a Govt Teacher before I entered administrative service. And I have a fair idea about the issues faced by Government schools," she stated.

The shortage of an English teacher has persisted since 2021-22, following the retirement of teachers and the promotion of another in 2023. A decision was made last month to appoint a new English teacher through staff rationalization, but this process has now been put on hold, leaving the school in a continued state of uncertainty.

GHSS Aghunato’s Vice Principal, N. Aremo Ngulli, highlighted the ongoing crisis. "At the higher secondary level, the school has only five Post Graduate Teachers (PGTs), which is inadequate for the more than 120 students enrolled each year," he said. The problem is not limited to English; the school is also in urgent need of a mathematics teacher at the higher level.

Efforts have been made to address the situation, with the school reaching out to civil organizations and government offices, including the Sub-Divisional Education Officer (SDEO) and District Education Officer (DEO). The administration has requested that the English teacher assigned to the school be retained, especially since the teacher has already submitted their joining report.

Despite these challenges, Kathyinla’s dedication has been a beacon of hope for the students. She ensures that she conducts classes before resuming her official duties as an administrator. "While speaking to Kathyinla, EAC Aghunato, the actual reason behind is the unavailability of the concern teacher in the school and I try take up the first class in the school so that I can resume my normal office duty as an EAC," she stated.

The Eastern Sumi Students’ Union has recognized and expressed gratitude for Kathyinla’s contribution, writing to both the EAC and the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Aghunato, commending their efforts in supporting the student community.

Beyond the teacher shortage, GHSS Aghunato faces additional challenges, including deteriorating infrastructure and limited facilities. Established in 1963, the school has seen little structural development over the years, with only minor external painting done recently. The foundation remains in dire need of repairs.

On a positive note, the school has adopted technology to improve education. The SMILE app, introduced to monitor teacher attendance and performance, initially faced technical difficulties but is now functional, ensuring greater accountability among faculty members. Additionally, the installation of a solar power system has provided a stable electricity supply, benefiting both students and teachers.

GHSS Aghunato continues to emphasize holistic education, encouraging students to participate in extracurricular activities. Many students are set to compete in the upcoming Inter-School Sports Competition 2025, organized by the Aghunato Town Students' Union in collaboration with local authorities.

Despite its remote location, GHSS Aghunato has consistently performed well in board examinations. The Sumi Hoho, the apex body of the Sumi tribe, has commended the school for its achievements, recognizing the dedication of both students and teachers.

Ngulli envisions transforming GHSS Aghunato into a center of excellence, balancing academic achievements with co-curricular development. "As long as I am in my position, I am committed to ensuring that the school continues to strive for excellence and becomes a model for other schools in the region," he affirmed.
