Kohima, May 21 (MExN): Fernwood School in collaboration with Sustainable Development Forum Nagaland (SDFN) organized an ‘awareness workshop on waste management and zero waste’ at Fernwood School, Kohima on May 15.
The SDFN team, Executive Director Amba Jamir, Programme Officer, Thejaneinuo Kaco and Account and Admit Officer Sukhavi oversee to the workshop sessions.
The resources person, Amba Jamir addressed the teacher delegates from various schools: Stella Hr. Sec School, Mezhur Hr. Sec School, Ministers Hill Hr. Sec School, Mount Sinai Hr. Sec School, Dainty buds along with teachers and students of Fernwood schools classes 12 and 10.
Amba exhorted the participants on the importance to adopt the concept of Zero Waste i.e. the three R’s: Reuse, Reduce, Recycle. However, he emphazied that it must ultimately lead to the fourth ‘R’ i.e. ‘Refuse’.
He highlighted that as consumers one can make a conscious decision to refuse the use of ‘one use items’ such as, plastics cutters, styrofoam products and polybags. He stated that, microplastics is the most widespread and persistent hazards of plastics. He urged individuals to a make a conscious effort to generate less waste and manage waste by not only reusing or reducing but refusing it. He also added that one should segregate waste and dispose-off systemically and that the end is not in the bins but in beating plastic pollution.
Furthermore, he facilitated the participators of the workshop on The Himalayan Clean-Up campaign (THC), on how one can partake in the cleanup, be it individuals institutions or offices in the clean up on May 26, 2018- a day dedicated to not only cleaning up our mountains, but also in understanding what is causing the mess. The Himalayan Clean-Up will be an advent event to World Environment Day- June 5.
