Teachers equipped with knowledge on disaster management

Teacher trainees participate in the demonstration during the disaster management training of teachers under National School Safety Programme in Kohima.

Dimapur, April 29 (MExN): 200 teachers from 200 schools in Kohima successfully attended the training of teachers under National School Safety Programme (NSSP). 

Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), the District Education Office Kohima and the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Kohima in collaboration with the Fire & Emergency Services and Civil Defence & Home Guards organized the training. The training was organized as the second phase of NSSP in two venues at Kohima, Rüzhükhrie Government Higher Secondary School Kohima and Red Cross Conference Hall Kohima from April 25 to 29.

The resource persons from the various schools equipped the trainees with knowledge on the various topics under disaster management. Dr. Hovithal Sothu from Administrative Training Institute, who is the State Co-ordinator for Disaster Management, attended for two days and spoke on the “Hazard and Vulnerability Profile of the State” and “Non- Structural Safety in Schools” in both the venues. The personnel from Fire & Emergency Services explained Fire Safety in School and demonstrated the use of the different types of fire extinguishers. The trainees tried their hands on the same. 

The jawans from Civil Defence & Home Guards headed by the Districts Commandant Kohima, Dally Jamir demonstrated Search and Rescue Techniques. Dally Jamir gave a power point presentation on Survival Skill and First Aid. SDO (C) Kohima, Razouvolie Dozo addressed the trainees on behalf of the DDMA Kohima. He explained Disaster Management and its components in brief and explained the disaster management structure in the state.

The programme culminated after the certificates were handed out. Deputy District Education Officer Kohima, Neizetuonuo and Junior Education Officer Kohima, Vilanuo pronounced the vote of thanks in the two venues.

Meanwhile, Neizetuonuo thanked all the heads of the schools that sent their teachers to attend the training and hope the lessons learnt will be put to practical use. She urged all the teachers to create a Disaster Management Committee in their own schools after they go back to their respective schools. Also she asked all the schools to prepare and submit the School Disaster Management Plan before the end of May 2013 to the District Education Office Kohima.

Thejangulie Zao, District Project Officer, Kohima, NSDMA, profusely thanked the staff of the District Education Office Kohima for the relentless support to make the programme a success. He further added that the programme was to spread awareness on safety in schools since school children is the most vulnerable group during times of disaster and that the schools should prepare the students for emergencies.
