DCPU Chümoukedima conducts workshop on JJ Act and POCSO Act
Chümoukedima, May 14 (MExN): The District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Chümoukedima, under the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Nagaland, organised a workshop on child protection at Government Higher Secondary School, Medziphema on May 13.
The workshop focused on the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, and was attended by teachers from the LSC Chümoukedima Complex.
Officials said the complex comprises 1 hub school and 4 spoke schools — GHSS Medziphema, GMS Medziphema Town, GMS Medziphema-Kuki, GMS Medziphema Village and GPS Agri Colony.
The programme aimed to create awareness on child protection services and legal mechanisms available for the protection and welfare of children.
Delivering the keynote address, District Child Protection Officer Nikito Zhimomi said teachers are often the first responders in identifying children in distress and that timely intervention and guidance can help address issues affecting children.
He also encouraged participants to utilise the services of the District Child Protection Unit.
Speaking on Child Helpline 1098, Project Coordinator of Child Helpline Chümoukedima, Mhaseto Rhakho, explained its functioning, objectives and support services available for children in need of care and protection.
He said the Juvenile Justice Act mandates reporting of cases involving children separated from their guardians and noted that failure to report such cases constitutes an offence.
“Child Helpline is a hope for millions of children,” he said.
Legal-cum-Probation Officer Wekhrope Marhu delivered a detailed session on the JJ Act, 2015, highlighting the role of various stakeholders, rehabilitation measures and the importance of ensuring care and protection for children in need.
He also stressed that corporal punishment is prohibited under the JJ Act and urged teachers to adopt positive and child-friendly approaches to discipline while ensuring the safety, dignity and well-being of children.
Marhu further spoke on the POCSO Act, 2012, explaining various offences covered under the law and underscoring the importance of timely intervention and support for child victims.
Officials said the workshop served as a platform for strengthening awareness and coordination among stakeholders while reaffirming the collective commitment towards child safety and welfare.
