‘Teaching is a choice not a chance’

Teacher coordinators trained on ‘effective teaching techniques and methods to build Peace’

Dimapur, April 22 (MExN): Peace Channel organised one day training for the teacher coordinators of Quality Peace Clubs, Dimapur on the theme ‘effective teaching techniques and methods to build Peace’ at Peace Channel Conference Hall, Dimapur on April, 20.

Alongla Aier, Associate Professor, Oriental Theological Seminary was the resource person along with Fr. C. P. Anto. While addressing the teachers she said that a teacher are the best influencers of the young mind and should encourage and create a condition for self learning among the students. “Teaching is a noblest profession and it is a choice and not a chance. Therefore, the teachers need to train the student to think and articulate rather than following the old banking method of teaching. Today we need to adapt the pedagogical approach where by the students become the centre of the class room and not the teacher. It is a natural thing in the state to go for teaching when all other employment avenues are bleak,” said Alongla.

She also spoke about different methods of teaching and techniques in class room management. Alongla also shared that creativity, involvement and most importantly personality of the teacher as the key to effective teaching. “A teacher teaches something just by teaching, something more is taught through his or her action and the most by what the teacher is,” she added.

Fr. C.P. Anto highlighted the role of teacher as the peace educator and exhorted the teachers to make the students as peer mediators in peace building. He also explained the forth coming activities of the Peace Channel. Active involvement of teachers with basic skills in peace education can create all our educational institutions a place of peace.

The programme concluded with an evaluation and effectiveness of Quality Peace Clubs in the institutions. The teachers shared their learning and strived to help and empower the slow learners, less privileged students and the children with behavioral disorders in their respective schools to prevent drop outs and conflicts in the family and society respectively. There were twenty teachers from different schools participated in the training.
