Nagaland’s very own indigenous pig breed 'Tenyi Vo' recognised by the National Bureau of Animal Genetics & Research, will be introduced at pig breeding farm, Sathazu Phek. This was informed by MLA & Advisor, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services & Women Resource Development, Government of Nagaland, R Khing on his official Twitter account on February 12.


The indigenous breed was certified by the Breed Registration Committee of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) on June 21, 2016.


It may be mentioned that Dr M Catherine Rutsa, Assistant Professor, Department of APM, Nagaland University, Medziphema applied for the certification of ‘Tenyi Vo’ breed.


Dr Catherine informed that the breed is indigenous to the districts of Kohima, Peren and Phek of Nagaland state and Senapati district of Manipur.


These pigs have a strong and long tapering snout, small erect ears and bright alert eyes. It is predominantly black in color with white markings on the forehead, flanks and legs. The tail is long and usually ends with a white switch. Adult pigs weigh from 35 to 50 kg. The estimated population is about 60,000 to 70,000.


‘Tenyi Vo’ also possesses excellent motherly quality and has very good meat quality with a distinctive flavour.


Meanwhile, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio informed that the state government endeavors to enhance pork productivity in the state for self-sufficiency. He said this to the assembly during his budget report on February 10 at the recently concluded session of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly.


In order to move towards self-sufficiency, Rio informed that the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) has initiated procurement of 24 numbers of pure breed Hampshire Pig from the United Kingdom to upgrade breeding stocks in the State.


This is being initiated under the National Livestock Mission – Piggery Development in NER. “Payment has been made to the Nodal State i.e. Government of Mizoram and the consignment is awaited,” said Rio.
