Manipur police officer Thounaojam Brinda, who had recently returned the state’s police medal for gallantry, on Sunday announced to contest in the upcoming elections to the Manipur Legislative Assembly.

She will contest the election from Yaiskul assembly constituency of Imphal. But she is yet to decide to which political party she would be contesting the elections.

Before making the announcement, an election rally planned by hundreds of her supporters in Imphal was foiled by the police. The police alleged that the proposed rally amounted to breaching COVID-19 protocol being enforced. Besides, the organizers did not obtain necessary permission from the concernd district administration, added the police.

The rally kicked-off from her residence at Yaiskul Janmasthan in Imphal around noon was foiled by the police at the start. When the rally led by Brinda came out of her residence, a large number of police personnel with riot gear arrived at the spot and stopped them from taking out the rally.

The police had a confrontation with the rallyists as they tried to carry out the rally forcibly. After a brief tussle, the police foiled the programme. However, no major untoward incident occurred in the police bid to foil the rally.

Earlier, Brinda and her supporters had a plan to organize a bike rally across the streets in Yaiskul constituency that is spread over the districts of Imphal West and Imphal East, but it was cancelled as the concerned district administration refused to give the required permission.

Brinda announced her decision to contest the election in a meeting held at her residence after the police foiled her proposed rally.

Later, talking to reporters, Brinda said that she was yet to decide which political party she is going to join. She also said that she would decide the political party she would join after due consultations with her supporters.

The noted police officer, while strongly condemning the police action foiling her election rally, asked why they were targeting her election rally while similar rallies of other intending candidates were allowed to organize. She alleged that since she joined the service as Manipur Police Service (MPS) officer, hurdles are always on her path.

Meanwhile, police clarified that the permission for carrying out the rally was not given considering the situation of COVID-19. It was not targeted to any particular individual, the police also said.
