Kohima, March 31 (MExN): Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, moderate to heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph are likely to occur at isolated to scattered locations across Nagaland from March 31 to April 3, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) said on Tuesday.

In a press release, the NSDMA under the Home Department advised citizens to remain vigilant and take necessary safety precautions during the forecast period.

Several districts including Peren, Dimapur, Kohima, Wokha, Tuensang, Kiphire, Mokokchung, Longleng and Phek may experience thunderstorms with lightning and strong surface winds, particularly on March 31 and April 1, the advisory stated.

Thunderstorms and rainfall are also expected in districts such as Chümoukedima, Mokokchung, Mon, Niuland, Tseminyu, Wokha and Longleng during the forecast period.

Heavy rainfall and strong winds may result in poor visibility, temporary traffic disruptions due to waterlogging, uprooting of trees, damage to vulnerable structures, and disruption of power and communication lines, the NSDMA said.

There is also a risk of landslides in vulnerable areas and lightning-related hazards to people and livestock in open spaces, it added.

Standing crops and horticultural produce may be affected by strong winds and heavy rainfall. Farmers are advised to take necessary precautionary measures to protect crops, livestock and agricultural infrastructure, the release stated.

The NSDMA advised the public to remain vigilant and take necessary safety precautions during thunderstorms and lightning activities.

Citizens are advised to avoid taking shelter under trees and near electric poles during lightning, stay indoors during thunderstorms, secure loose objects such as hoardings, tents and temporary structures, and avoid travelling during intense rainfall whenever possible. Farmers and outdoor workers were advised to avoid working in open fields during thunderstorms.

For accurate, real-time alerts and verified weather updates, citizens were encouraged to download and use the Safer Nagaland App, the advisory added.
