Rhipicephalussanguineus is the most common ecto- parasitic tick in dogs, it is brown in colour. Severe infestation in dog causes acute progressive ascending motor paralysis due to salivary neuro toxin produced by Rhipicephalussanguineus.The tick is also a recognized vector of several diseases in dogs such as canine Babesiosis,Haemobartonellosis and Ehrichiosis.
Signs and Symptoms of Tick Infestation in Dog:
- Dog appear pale and anaemic in condition.
- Loss of appetite, weak, depress and loss of weight.
- Presence of ticks around the base of ears and inguinal region.
- Change in the voice of dog with a grunting sound.
- Inability to stand on its own due to fore and hind limb weakness.
- Constant itching and rubbing of body surfaces against surrounding objects.
Some Steps to Prevent Tick Infestation in Dog:
- Always keep the dog shed dry and clean.
- Feed well balance nutritious diet.
- Daily brush and groom your dog.
- Bath your dog at least once a week with quality dog soap and shampoo.
- Daily cleaning of the dog food and water utensils.
- Regular and timely deworming and vaccination.
In case of severe infestation of tick in your pet dog, the owner should consult a Veterinarian or visit the nearest Veterinary Health Centre along with the infected dog for early diagnosis and proper treatment.
