Tizit killing: AR under scanner for Ceasefire violation

MON, JUNE 7 (MExN): Taking serious note of the killing of one Akai Konyak by the 23 AR, the Konyak Union Tizit and the Tizit Area Students’ Union asked the Nagaland Commissioner and Border Commissioner for spot and boundary verification before any untoward incidents occur.

The presidents of the KU and TASU, T. Penkham and Wangdun respectively, stated that spot verification on June 4 by the unions had revealed that the Arunachal police, public and the 23 AR had entered Nagaland, crossing a boundary of one and a half kilometer. The deceased, Akai, who was an innocent civilian is said to have been shot at around 1:30 pm.

Condemning the incident which took place on June 2, where the AR under Major Nishad, the CC of A Company, stationed at Kanubari, Khonsa district of Arunachal Pradesh, the unions questioned the reason for violation of the Ceasefire Ground Rules.

The release also alleged that the uniformed men also allowed the public to torture Mahlei Beham and his son Teichat Beiham who were working at Shimsa tea garden and locked up Teichat at Kanubari police station. It was revealed that the two victims were charged of killing the pig to supply to the NSCN (IM). Questioning Major Nishad on the reason for the barbaric act, the unions asked the Central government and the Chairman of Cease Fire Monitoring cell to take necessary action against the culprit and compensate the family of the deceased. The unions also appealed to the state government to take steps to address the June 2 incident.

Meanwhile, Mon DC, Patton said that the case had been registered under Tizit police station and investigations were going on at the moment. He divulged that a report had been submitted to the Nagaland Commissioner and the Police Headquarter but added that the issue was a law and order problem and not a border dispute. Though confirming the gist of the incident, Patton added that the actual details of the incident were subject to confirmation by the investigation.
