Tokheho wins LS bye-election with huge margin

The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP)’s candidate Tokheho Yepthomi bagged the bye-election to the lone Lok Sabha Parliamentary constituency in Nagaland by a huge margin of 173746 votes.  

The bye-election, held on May 28, witnessed a straight fight between the ruling NDPP and the opposition NPF.  

According to the final update from the Chief Electoral Officer, Nagaland on Thursday, the total votes in favour of the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Alliance (PDA) backed NPPP candidate was 594205 votes.  

The opposition Naga People’s Front candidate C Apok Jamir managed to secure 420459 votes. The total winning margin was 173746 votes.  

Out of the total 1018655 voters, 3991 voters opt for None Of The Above (NOTA) option as per the final figure.  

Counting of vote for the bye-poll held on May 28 was taken up today in 13 centres across the state.  

The biggest winning margin was in Zunheboto district with 37,573 in favour of Yepthomi. He polled 60,830 while Apok got 22,772 votes. Of the total 373 ballot papers, 96 went in favour of Yepthomi and 90 for Jamir while 187 were rejected on various counts.  

Prasielie Pienyu, Chief Agent to Tokheho Yepthomi for LS bye-poll received the winning certificate from the state Returning Officer on Thursday evening.  

Speaking at the felicitation programme organized by NDPP for MP elect Tokheho Yepthomi here at Hotel Vivor this evening, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said the result showed that the people of Nagaland believed in the PDA to deliver them the goods, "thus they have given us the mandate."  

Rio assured all support to Yepthomi and guidance wherever necessary. Tokheho meanwhile expressed his gratitude to God, the people and the PDA coalition for giving him the opportunity to work for the people of Nagaland through a greater platform.  

He assured to give his best to work, alongside the PDA, for the people of Nagaland.
