‘Totally against’ economic blockade on Peren district: DCCI

Dimapur, April 27 (MExN): The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), while extending its solidarity to NTTU in its fight for justice, today stated that it is “totally against” the proposed imposition of economic blockade on Peren district as well as not allowing business establishments run by Peren’s citizens to operate in Chümoukedima and Dimapur districts from May 2.

The DCCI also takes exception to the fact that NTTU had not consulted either DCCI or Chümoukedima Chambers of Commerce with regard to imposition of economic blockade, stated a press release from DCCI Vice president, V Shikuto Achumi.

In this regard, DCCI iterated that it will ensure that normal economic activities in Dimapur are not affected in any manner and assured that it would protect the interest and business establishments of all its members.

The members and business community in general were further informed to contact Convenor, DCCI Grievances Cell, Omega Yepthomi (@7005526728) in case of any disturbances or problems.

The DCCI’ release came against the backdrop of resolutions passed by the Nagaland Timber Traders’ Union (NTTU) and its affiliated units on April 26 announcing the proposed economic blockade and other measure in “retaliation to the ban” imposed by the Peren’s Civil Society Organisations on transportation of timbers except sawn products from the district to outside.

Meanwhile, the DCCI also conveyed that it extends full support and solidarity to NTTU in the latter’s fight for justice and their right to pursue their businesses without undue interference from any quarter.

DCCI has all along understood and sympathised with the timber traders and tree farmers who are trying to make a decent living despite facing multiple hurdles and hardships, including illegal taxation imposed by various groups and agencies, it said.

However, it disagreed with proposed steps adopted by the NTTU and its affiliated units.
