Kohima | December 10
Villages in the past were invariably built on hilltops with approaches running across rugged terrains and reminder of war strategic mindset in the headhunting days of yore. “The village gate stood on the approach with rocky walls and thickly grown thorny bushes and climbers on both sides making it literally the only door to enter the village.”
Against this backdrop, the Lhisemia Thinuo (khel) Kohima village inaugurated it is first traditional kharu (gate) at Merübotsa, New Secretariat Road, Kohima on December 10.
As inscribed on the wall of the gate, “great care is taken in choice of wood for the door to ensure its quality and durability. The village gate is both symbolically and functionally important.”
Highlighting the symbolic meaning of the traditional art motifs on the village gate, Vilalhou Noudi said, “The arts are the manifestations of our forefather’s firm belief in a creator God and symbolic reminders of their earnest prayers to God for blessings.”
These, he added are expression of acknowledgement and gratitude to God on one hand and symbolic reminders of their prosperity, security, power and victory on the other hand.
“Traditional art motifs on the village gate are unique and intriguing with symbolic meanings,” Noudi stated. (see table)
Kohima Village Council chairman, Helievio Solo referring the gate said this is a traditional and cultural heritage for posterity.
He emphasised on the need for preserving and promoting our own culture pointing out, “we are copying other cultures while neglecting our own culture and traditions.”
Guest of honour, MLA Khriehu Liezietsu said 'today is a historic day not only for the L Khel but for the Kohima Village.” He prayed “May this kharu beautify our village, and may all those who passed through this gate be blessed and have peace and prosperity.”
