Wokha, September 25 (MExN): The Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) Wokha on Friday informed of the various training and demonstration programmes being conducted for the farmers at the block level.

Wokha Block: In the Wokha Block and Thillong Village, the ATMA Wokha conducted a training and demonstration programme on winter vegetables on September 15.

Training on package and practices of winter vegetables was shared by Lily Tungoe ATM while Disease Management was conducted by Elilo Kikon, ATM Wokha Block.

The resource persons highlighted the advantage of nursery bed preparation, selection of good variety of diseased free seeds, importance of line sowing and spacing for nutrient and disease management.

In the demonstration programme on ‘Nursery Bed Preparation on Winter Vegetables Crops’, Mhalo Tungoe (SMS Extension KYK and BTT) Convenor Wokha block conducted hands-on demonstration on nursery bed preparation, where a raised seed bed of 1meter wide and 15cm high and of convenient length according to condition of the plot was prepared.

Winter vegetables seeds like cauliflower, cabbage, knol-khol, carrot, radish, spinach, coriander etc, were distributed to the 32 farmers who attended the programme.  

Chukitong Block: A programme on ‘Training on Cultivation Practices of Winter Vegetables (Cabbage& Pea)’ was held at Yanthamo Village September 10.

Zachamo ATM gave detailed information on the cultivation techniques of winter vegetables like cabbage and pea. He stressed on the importance of preparation of nursery seedbed for sowing before transplanting in main field for cabbage. He also shared about integrated pest management for cabbage and pea.

Demonstration on nursery bed preparation was imparted Nzani ATM, Chukitong block. She shared the process of sowing cabbage seeds by maintaining correct row to row spacing.

Seeds of various winter vegetables like cabbage, pea, coriander and broccoli were also distributed in the programme which was attended by 18 farmers, 4 ATMA officials and BTT Convener.

Wozhuro Block: On September 16, the ATMA Wokha, Wozhuro block organized a farmers training at Totsu Community Hall, Totsu Village.

Zujanbemo Khuvung ATM spoke on the topic ‘Package of Practices on Winter Vegetables’.

He highlighted the importance of proper adoption of cultivation practices such as field preparation, seed selection, seed rate, spacing, time of sowing, application of farm manures, irrigation, intercultural operations, integrated pest and disease management and post-harvest management.

A demonstration programme was also conducted by Shanchobeni Humtsoe BTT Convenor & HI.

She shared the importance of ‘identification of sword and water sucker in banana’, laying emphasis on selecting the right type of suckers and how to differentiate between the sword suckers and the water suckers for good planting materials.

23 farmers along with 4 ATMA officials and BTT convener, Wozhuro block attended the training programme which was followed by seed distribution.

Sanis Block: The Sanis Block ATMA, Wokha conducted a training and demonstration on Winter Crops (Cole crops) at Tsopo village on September 14.

The training was conducted by Lothungbeni Murry, ATM, Sanis block. A brief introduction on crucifer crops was given and common pest found in crucifers were discussed. Common pests like cabbage butterfly, tobacco caterpillar and aphids were reported by most of the farmers in their fields thus different control measures were made known to the participants particularly for the mentioned pests. Management of pests discussed was mainly focused on cultural and biological methods.

Winter vegetable seeds and Neem-oils were also handed over to the participants by Edward Humtsoe, BTT, Convenor, Sanis Block. Around 20 farmers form Chudi and Tsopo village participated in the programme.

Bhandari Block: Training on packages and practices of ginger cultivation was held on September 17 at Bhandari town.

Package and practices starting from field preparation till harvesting was explained to the farmers by Jonjibeni Mozhui ATM. She explained on how to choose healthy and disease free rhizome as seed tuber for better crop performance and high quality yield. 

Demonstration was also carried out by Tracy Mozhui, ATM. She identified the disease as the soft rot or paheli of ginger which was causing huge loss to the farmers in the cultivated areas of Bhandari Block. Mozhui explained all the various symptoms of the disease to the 16 farmers who attended the programme along with 4 ATMA officials.

Ralan Block: Training on cultivation practices of winter vegetables and demonstration of nursery bed was conducted at Ralan block on September 19 in Liphanyan village.

Nchumthung Shitiri ATM highlighted the importance of nursery bed preparations for most vegetables, spacing, land preparation, pest and disease management etc.

Stating that seeds tend to be healthier and more resistant to diseases when ample amount of nutrients is provided during their germination stage, he emphasized on the importance of nursery bed preparations.

Demonstration programme on seed bed preparation of broccoli was conducted by Soyingbeni Tsanglao, ATM.

A raised nursery bed was prepared by incorporating compost into the soil of the bed. Broccoli seeds were were sown in lines and covered with fine compost material. The use of coco-peat on nursery or seedling trays was also brought to the farmers’ knowledge.

50 farmers who attended the training programme were given broccoli seeds and coco peat.

Changpang Block: Training on preparation of seed bed for winter crops (cabbage, broccoli) was conducted by James, ATM on September 17 at Changpang.

He illustrated the various techniques and the steps that have to be followed during the seed bed preparation. Detailed series of guidelines that has to be followed during the seed bed preparation of cabbage and broccoli were also highlighted. 

Demonstration on production of compost manure was also conducted by Y Yiben Patton using organic residues of plants, leaves. A step by step demonstration was conducted and the farmers were also given a chance to try out the process.

The farmers were further encouraged to take up production of compost manure as it was cost effective, requires less resources and involves minimal labor. The training was attended by 12 farmers along with 3 three ATMA functionaries.
