A two day long ‘Skill development training on floral arrangement and design, Post Harvest Management (PHM) & home scale preservation,’ under the aegis of the Directorate of Horticulture got underway here on November 14.


Speaking the inaugural session, Nagaland’s horticulture advisor Mhathung Yanthan maintained Nagaland possess favorable climatic condition for cultivation of fruits, vegetables, spices and flowers.


In this, he stressed on the need to focus on commercial scale cultivation of various crops including floriculture which is in high demand.


He said that a time has come to scale up the production and improve in term of quality and packaging.


Highlighting the scope of floriculture for a livelihood, he stressed on the need to know the basic techniques and take up the same as an enterprise.


He said that Nagaland can become a rich state if the rich natural resources is tapped and used properly.


He called upon the youth to come forward and avail the various packages and schemes being extended by the government.


He also urged upon the youth to be sincere and develop hard working attitude to excel in life.


Later, Yanthan released “Manual flower arrangement and design” edited by Dr. Rokolhuü Keditsu, assistant professor NU: SASRD, Medziphema and published by Department of Horticulture, Government of Nagaland.


Earlier, Dr. R. Elithung Lotha, Director of Horticulture said the department has been promoting floriculture during 2001-2003 alongside horticultural activities in the state.


He said that the department gives importance to floriculture in the state.


The director urged the participants to put into practice whatever they have learnt during the training and gain maximum benefit from it.


Later, Dr. Rokolhuü Keditsu, assistant professor NU, SASRD, Medziphema in her power point presentation stated that flower is something which itself contains a meaning.


She stressed on the need to discourage the use of synthetic flowers and focus more of using natural ones.


She said that Egyptian floral design began in 2800 BC-28 BC, which was first discovered in artifacts and wall paintings used for decorations in temples, banquet tables, wreaths for guest, used in processions and given to honour.


The manual, which was released today stated that enhancing the beauty of flowers with artistic arrangement is the art of flower arrangements.


The manual touched on different types of flower arrangements as Floral Bouquets, Table Centerpieces, Floral Wreaths, Floral Baskets, Vertical Flower Arrangement, Elliptical Flower Arrangement, Fan Shaped Flower Arrangement, Horizontal Flower Arrangement, Crescent Flower Arrangement, Oval Flower Arrangement, S'Shaped Flower Arrangement and Triangular Flower Arrangement.


172 participants from 11 districts of the state registered for this training, which will continue till November 15. Mishento Ghap, deputy director, Directorate of Horticulture chaired the inaugural session while vote of thanks was proposed by horticulture officer T. Amenla.


On November 15, the programme will start from 10:00 am onwards.


Dr. Rokolhuü Keditsu will take demonstration session and Meyasashi, deputy director on home scale preservation demonstration.
