Dimapur, February 17 (MExN): National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), Nagaland conducted one-day training on Indoor Residual Spray (IRS) for malaria vector control in collaboration with Hindustan Insecticides Limited (HIL) on February 4, 2014 at CMO conference hall, Dimapur.
A press release informed that IRS, a proven and highly effective malaria control measure, involves coordination, timely spraying of the interior walls of homes with insecticides. Mosquitoes are killed or repelled by the spray, preventing transmission of the disease.
Dr. T. Basu from HIL was the resource person of the training, where 60 district vector borne disease consultants (DVBDC)/ Malaria Technical Supervisor (MTS), Malaria Inspector (MI) and Surveillance Inspector (SI) from all the districts participated. Dr. Sao Tunyi (M & E Consultant, NVBDCP, Nagaland) chaired the training. Dr. P. Tia Jamir (SPO, NVBDCP, Nagaland) highlighted about the importance of IRS.
In the first session, Dr. T. Basu gave a PowerPoint presentation, in which he briefed about the objectives of IRS which is to reduce the life span of female mosquito population. In the second session, Dr. T Basu imparted a practical training on the use of spray pumps, pump checking, nozzle checking, preparation of suspension, spraying practice (Distance, speed, time test) and pump cleaning which was followed by demonstration. The success of IRS program lies on the efficient and uniform application of recommended insecticides on vector resting surfaces. The technical skills of spray operators are a critical requirement, the release noted.
