Training held on water quality surveillance for WATSAN

Tuensang, February 7 (MExN): A one day training programme on Water Quality Monitoring & Surveillance for Water and Sanitation (WATSAN) Committee was held on February 7 at CKS Hall Tuensang town.


It was organized by DWSM, PHED Tuensang Division and sponsored by NRDWP, PHED Nagaland, a press release from Tsong’s K Yim stated.


During the training session, Er S Akangjongshi, JE, PHED Tuensang addressed the trainees on the topic “Sources of water pollution and methods of water treatment.” He explained how human activity was polluting water sources, and talked about the importance of protecting its sources and treatment, such as traditional well, spring well and highlighted some methods for protection of sources - sedimentation, filtration, disinfection etc.


Also speaking at the training, IEC Consultant PHED Tuensang, Ashale Seb spoke on Water and Excreta related diseases. She mentioned that there are nearly 50 different types of water and excreta related diseases. The spread of major infections such as cholera, typhoid, dysentery, hepatitis A and giardiasis were mainly because of biological contamination of drinking water, she explained and gave preventive measures and treatment, stating that hygienic measures should be taken such as safe disposal of human wastes, waste water and solid wastes.


Tzutippokla Longkumer, Chemist, PHED Tuensang, spoke on water quality standards and emphasized on the importance of water quality and highlighted that the main objective was to determine physical, chemical and bacteriological characteristics of water. She underscored the duty of the WATSAN members to collect water samples of their respective village for testing. The trainees were also taught on how to collect samples and label it. The speaker conducted hands on training on “Field testing kit” to trainees.
