Training on language and culture underway at NU

Focus on preservation and promotion of Naga languages and culture

Kohima, June 4 (MExN): A training programme on language and culture for Language Officers and Assistant Language Officers organized by Centre for Naga Tribal Language Studies (CNTLS), Nagaland University, Kohima Campus (NUKC) was inaugurated at NUKC Meriema on June 4. The seven-day training will culminate on June 11.  

Around 30 participants attended the inaugural ceremony where Prof. RC Gupta, Pro Vice-Chancellor, NU, Kohima Campus was the chief guest, informed a press release. In his speech, Prof. R.C Gupta stated that there are around 780 languages in the world out of which around 220 are spoken in the North-eastern part of India. He shared his opinion on endangered languages and how we should preserve and promote our mother tongue least it gets endangered.  

Dr. L. Bijenkumar Singh, Course Director in his keynote address mentioned that the training programme is designed exclusively for the Language Officers and Assistant Language Officers, among others, aims to expose the participants to various aspects of language and culture exploring and discovering, with the core focus on preservation and promotion of Naga languages and culture.  

Particularly in the wake of the introduction of ‘Heritage Studies’ in school syllabi from the next academic session, i.e. 2019, Language Officers and Assistant Language Officers who are the key stakeholders, directly or indirectly, in the formulation of text books on Heritage Studies, the Centre believes that the training programme can help them in enriching their working knowledge in this respect.
