Training on wildlife law enforcement underway in Mkg

Two-day training on ‘wildlife law enforcement and counter wildlife trafficking and biodiversity conservation’ for Forest and Police personnel got underway at the Conference Hall, Conservator of Forests Complex, Mokokchung. The training is jointly organised by the Nagaland Forest Department, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) India and the Nagaland State Biodiversity Board (NSBB) began with participation of 50 persons on March 7.

The inaugural programme was chaired by Dr Sentitula, IFS, Divisional Forest Officer, Mokokchung who gave a brief background on the training, highlighted the status of Purchased land, Community Reserve and Protected Forest and laid emphasis on building capacity of the frontline staff in terms of legal knowhow, to protect and conserve and at the same time tackle Wildlife crime especially cross border trafficking of wildlife products.

Shashank Pratap Singh, IAS, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mokokchung was the guest of honour. He spoke about sustainable wildlife management through protection and conservation of population and habitat. He appealed to all participants to concentrate on learning from different resource persons of the programme and implement learning optimally.

Satya Prakash Tripathi, IFS (retired PCCF & HoFF), and Chairman, State Biodiversity Board, Nagaland, in his speech gave a historical background of the training. He emphasized the need for creating awareness among stakeholders for conservation of natural resources along with combating wildlife crimes.

Dev Prakash Bankhwal, IFS (retired PCCF, Wildlife) and Chief Wildlife Warden, Assam and the Team Leader WCS spoke on creating a sense of ownership towards natural resources and equipping the frontline staff to tackle crimes.
