Pughoboto, March 13 (MExN): In a landmark initiative aimed at boosting organic farming and improving logistical support for local farmers, Dr Sukhato A Sema, MLA of 13 A/C Pughoboto, officially flagged off a transportation vehicle for Pughoboto Organic Farmer Producer Company Limited (FPC).

The Pughoboto Organic Farmer Producer Company Ltd currently supports 500 registered farmers, and the introduction of the transportation vehicle is expected to enhance market access, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve supply chain efficiency. “This initiative is a crucial step toward self-reliance and sustainability in the agricultural sector,” stated a press release received here.

The event was held at VDB Hall, Pughoboto Town, as part of the Annual General Meeting of the Farmer Producer Company under the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for the North Eastern Region (MOVCD-NER).

The event was graced by ADC Pughoboto, Tiameren Chang, SDAO Pughoboto Kitoho Michael Swu, representatives from COLKS and FPC representatives, all of whom acknowledged the significance of the initiative in uplifting the local farming community.

During his address, MLA Dr Sukhato A Sema emphasised the need for farmers to transition to large-scale organic farming, assuring them that logistical challenges would no longer be a hindrance to their growth and market expansion.

“The government is committed to empowering our farmers, ensuring that they have all the necessary resources and support to expand their production and reach new markets. With this transportation vehicle, our organic produce will now have better access to consumers, both within and beyond Nagaland,” said Dr Sukhato A Sema.

Dr Sukhato also highlighted various government schemes and initiatives designed to benefit farmers. He encouraged them to actively participate in subsidy programs, financial assistance schemes, and training sessions that would enhance their agricultural productivity.

He also focused on the Carbon Credit Programme, a global initiative that incentivizes eco-friendly and sustainable farming practices. He elaborated on the pros and cons of the program, urging farmers to explore the potential of earning carbon credits by adopting climate-friendly agricultural methods.

“We must embrace sustainability in farming, not just for economic benefits but also for the preservation of our environment. The Carbon Credit Programme can open new financial avenues for our farmers while promoting responsible farming practices,” he added.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment from all stakeholders to continue strengthening organic farming, ensuring better financial security for farmers, and creating a sustainable agricultural ecosystem in Pughoboto.
