Tributes pour in for former MLA Hewoto

Kohima, September 29 (MExN): Following the demise of former Minister and Vice President of NDPP, Y Hewoto Awomi in Dimapur on September 28 several political parties, organisation and others have mourned. They have also extended condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.

WC NNPGs: Working Committee (WC) Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) has mourned the demise of their ‘dear friend Ato Kukau’ and former Nagaland Minister, Y Hewoto Awomi at Eden Hospital, Dimapur. In a condolence message, N Kitovi Zhimomi, Ato Kilonser GPRN/NSCN & Convener, WC, NNPGs said that he was a man of strong will and determination to reform the divided Naga society. As a politician he was a giant slayer exhibiting immaculate understanding of the ground situation.  

‘His desire to forge peace and understanding among Naga political groups was admirable. There was clarity of thought process in his understanding of the Indo-Naga issue. His peace initiatives transcended family, clan or tribe. Never one to indulge in nepotism, he always was for peace in Nagaland and resolution of the conflict. WC leaders had the privilege to meet him many times before and even during his time of illness. A brave man with a warm reassuring personality. A Naga leader in his own right,’ the note stated. 

“Y Hewoto Awomi became a leader of men by dint of hard work, honesty and confidence in his ability. This is a stirring example for fellow Nagas to emulate,” it added. 

BJP Nagaland: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in its press note said that former Minister and Vice President of NDPP, Hewoto Awomi was a philanthropic leader, whose passion for serving his people is well known. A refined and prolific statesman and a tall political figure for the NDPP; his sudden passing is not only a lost to our alliance partnership, but a great lost for the entire Nagas, it stated.

NPCC: NPCC President, K Therie remembered Hewoto as hard working, adventurous and a self-made person. He was a good orator who beheld the attention of any audience, his wit ever at hand. He served the people with utmost dedication and sincerity and leaves behind a legacy many cannot emulate. In his passing away, an irreparable void has been created not only for the bereaved family members, but for Naga society as a whole.

NPF Minority Wing: NPF Minority Wing said that Hewoto was well-liked, popular leader in minority community for his love and concern shown towards minority citizens in Nagaland. He will be remembered with towering respect for his strong leadership and immense service during his political career. He was a visionary leader with patience and Tenacity.

NPP: NPP Nagaland stated that during his political career as Minister of CAWD, Labour & Employment, Hewoto not only brought about equitable and inclusive development of Nagaland but also laid emphasis on bringing the North Eastern region on the map of progress and development. He was greatly revered by his contemporaries as well as the young and upcoming leaders of all parties alike for his deep sense of dedication, wisdom, political acumen and sense of humor. As a people’s leader and former member of Dimapur Municipal Council, Y Hewoto Awomi tried his best to uplift the lot of people belonging to all religious groups, communities and tribes. 

DY CM: Dy CM and BLP leader Y Patton described Hewoto as a compassionate leader who always put the welfare of the people above all other things. His passing away is a great loss for the Nagas but he will be remembered and his good deeds will be an inspiration to others. 

WSH: Western Sumi Hoho (WSH) said that Hewoto was a multi-faceted personality whose priority in life was always ‘first for the people.’ As an active sitting member of the Western Sumi Advisory Board (WSAB), his valued advice was instrumental in shaping the working and decisions of the WSH. 

He was the founding father of Western Sumi Youth Front (WSYF) and founding member of the Dimapur District Citizen Forum (DDCF). Also, as founder of Muslim Council, Hewoto was respected by one and all alike for always prioritising the welfare of the people in the spirit of equality and humanity above all other considerations.

Hewoto Awomi was a Naga first, and then a Sumi. In his death, the Nagas have lost one true great Naga leader. He may be gone, but the exemplary life that he lived with the values of what being a mass leader entailed, will forever remain as his legacy for us to cherish and emulate, the hoho stated. 

WSYF: Western Sumi Youth Front (WSYF) stated that Hewoto was a kind and generous person who had genuine concern for the society. He served as a member of Dimapur Town Council from 1995 to 2002. He represented 2 Dimapur-II constituency from 2003 to 2007 and 3 Gaspani-I constituency from 2008 to 2013 and served the state with great diligence holding portfolios as Minister and Parliamentary Secretary. He was a leader who stood for the masses and reflects the aspiration of the people. His leadership qualities shall remain an inspiration and his footprints will always be remembered for all times to come.

SKK: SKK remembered Hewoto as a true leader who was an inspiration to many youths and students, ‘we have lost a great leader whose selfless contribution in various capacities to the society and the SKK in particular will be forever acknowledged in his good memory.’ 

NGBF: Nagaland Gaon Bura Federation (NGBF) said that Hewoto was known for his straightforwardness and frankness in all his approaches. He has contributed in various capacities as a leader for the welfare of our society.  In his demise we have lost a prominent leader of nagas' as a whole.

KTCN: Kachari Tribal Council Nagaland (KTCN) said that in his demise Dimapur in particular and the whole state of Nagaland in general has lost a great leader. KTCN offer condolences and pray that Almighty God will grant strength and solace to the bereaved family members in this time of sorrow. 

RNIFN: Rongmei Naga Indigenous Forum Nagaland (RNIFN) stated that Hewoto was a good leader, a man of trustworthy. He has served his people in different capacities as a politician as well as social activist.  A man may die, but his legacy will continue through his deeds. Today the pain of losing him is difficult to bear because this society needed him for more years. 

SCD: Sumi Council Dimapur (SCD) said that Hewoto was a prominent public figure who started as a Member of the erstwhile Dimapur Town Committee. Thereafter, he contested Assembly election from Dimapur-2 and then again from Ghaspani 1 defeating two heavyweights in Nagaland politics in successive general elections. This goes to prove that he was always ready to take up challenges against all odds and come out successfully.
