In observance of World Environment Day, Loyem Memorial School in Tuensang organised a student-led programme on June 5 under the global theme ‘Ending Plastic Pollution.’
The event brought together students, teachers, and eco-club members to raise awareness on the growing threats posed by plastic waste and environmental degradation.
The programme was initiated by Thongti, a Class 9 student, who welcomed participants. Denngoi and Lovely Chang (Class 9), along with Tsudang and Lovely Das (Class 10), presented their ideas and research through charts and hand-drawn illustrations, highlighting the harmful effects of plastic on ecosystems and human health.
Ongjinglemla, the school’s Eco-Club in-charge, delivered the keynote address, drawing attention to the urgent need to change daily habits that contribute to pollution. “Plastic not only chokes marine life but also renders soil infertile, threatening food security,” she said. She also touched upon broader issues such as deforestation and rising air pollution.
“The solution begins at home—by reducing, reusing, and recycling. These are not just slogans but survival strategies,” she told the students.
Following the formal programme, the Assistant Headmaster, Kontok, offered a vote of thanks, appreciating the efforts of the students and staff in making the event meaningful. The programme concluded with a community-driven cleanliness drive and tree plantation in the school campus, reinforcing the day’s message with direct action.
