Tuensang: NSCW creates legal awareness on domestic violence

Tuensang, October 4 (MExN): A one-day seminar on Legal Awareness Programme on ‘Domestic Violence’ was organised by the Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) in Tuensang to create awareness about legal rights of protection and safety from crimes related to domestic violence. 

The programme which took place on September 30 was supported by the National Commission for Women (NCW), in coordination with Changsao Thangjam Setshang (CTS), a delayed press release from the NSCW informed on October 4. 

During the programme which was chaired by NSCW member Chongliu, the introductory note was delivered by W Nginyeih Konyak, also a member of the NSCW, who highlighted that domestic violence is mostly unreported due factors like stigma and fear of losing children etc. “Only when the violence get worst or result in serious injury or death, the case is forwarded to the police who takes time for investigation and prosecuting,” Konyak stated. 

She also said that the Nagaland State Commission for Women organised the seminar to bring legal awareness and ensure that domestic violence victims know their legal rights for protection and safety from crimes, and also to the bridge gap by involving all stakeholders, including legal experts, police and academicians, tribal hohos, civil societies, and people at the grassroots.

The resource person in the first session, Khengo from the District Welfare Officer’s establishment highlighted the implementation and monitoring of welfare schemes by the Social Welfare Department under National Social Assistance programmes. In the second session, P Herola, Panel Lawyer, Tuensang District Legal Services Authority, spoke on ‘Protection of women from domestic violence,’ prevention, prohibition and maintenance under the Act.

Officer-in-Charge of Tuensang Women Police Station Chilliam spoke on the ‘Role of Police in dealing with Domestic Violence’ and highlighted important laws for protection of women under the Indian Penal Code in the third session, the release stated.

The NSCW team also visited Tuensang District Hospital, Women Police Station, Sakhi –One Stop Centre and District Jail, as part of its annual activities to interact and assess the liveability, safety and protection of women inmates, it added.
