Dimapur, March 17 (MExN): The Zunheboto Police has seized various banned prescription drugs and arrested two persons for alleged drug trafficking and violations under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
According to an update from the state DIPR received here on Friday, the first arrest was made on February 6 as part of the state police’s continued ‘war on drugs’ operation during the election period. A combined team from the Atoizu Police Station and static surveillance team (SST) intercepted a vehicle at Khitsakita in Zunheboto district and seized 200 bottles of cough syrup and 6900 numbers of Spasmo Proxyvon (SP) capsules. In this connection, one person identified as Hukato Assumi was arrested and a case was registered at Atoizu Police Station, the DIPR update informed.
As per the update, further police investigation revealed that the cough syrup was sourced from a person identified as Kajol Baidya who reportedly works in a pharmacy in Dimapur without any prescription by a doctor or a medical practitioner. A non-bailable warrant and search warrant was obtained from the Court and a subsequent search and arrest operation was carried out. The Zunheboto Police is said to have raided the identified premises and arrested the alleged accused and seized another 752 cough syrup. The premises (shop and godown) of RK Drug Distributors located at MP road, Dimapur have also been sealed.
Further investigation is being pursued to unravel the nexus in the instant case of drugs smuggling, the DIPR update stated.
Meanwhile, the Nagaland Police has advised the public not to sell, purchase, transport, or use banned prescription drugs without advice from medical practitioners. “The pharmacist and chemists are also warned and advised that prescription drugs should not be sold without medical advice as the same is a contravention of the NDPS act and other legal provisions which may result in not only criminal action but also cancellation of the licences,’ it cautioned.
Any information about persons involved in drug trafficking or traffickers may be shared with Nagaland police through its social media handles or by email or to any senior officers in the department. The names or photos or phone numbers, etc., of traffickers can be shared with police and the Identity of the informers will be safeguarded, it added.
