UCC will have adverse & negative impact on society: Konyak Union

DIMAPUR, JULY 12 (MExN): The Konyak Union has strongly opposed the proposed implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by the Government of India and said the introduction of UCC would have adverse and negative impact on the existing peaceful society.

In a press release, the KU maintained that the Konyak land, although predominantly inhabited by Christians, holds the values of inclusivity and respects all faiths and communities. “Our community strongly believes in upholding the principles of customary practices and the existing laws of the land protected by Article 371 (A) of the Indian Constitution, which have served us well throughout generations,” it stated.

It expressed apprehension that the implementation of UCC has the potential to disrupt the delicate fabric of the society and may lead to the erosion of the unique cultural practices, custom, and traditions that have shaped the identity of the Konyak community.

The UCC, by attempting to standardize personal laws across different religious communities, risks undermining the diversity and richness of our land, it pointed out.

While reiterating its commitment to maintaining peace and harmony within its jurisdiction, the KU said it firmly oppose any attempts to impose the UCC and vowed that it will not allow its implementation under any circumstances.

Existing legal framework, based on customary practices and the law of the land, has served us well and continues to ensure justice and fairness for all members of our community, it added.

Highlighting this, the KU has called upon the authorities and policy makers to respect the autonomy and unique identity of the Konyak community and the Nagas at large.

“We request a thoughtful and inclusive approach to governance that considers the specific needs and aspirations of our community, allowing us to preserve our rich heritage and customs,” it appealed.

The KU said it remains open to dialogue and constructive engagement with all stakeholders to address any concerns and find mutually agreeable solutions that uphold the principles of justice, equality, and respect for diversity.
