ULB Polls: Rapid development in ENPO area as 61 candidates file nomination

Morung Express News
Dimapur | June 11

Rapid development unfolded in the ENPO area on June 11 as reports surfaced of numerous candidates filing nominations for urban local bodies (ULBs) elections from Eastern Nagaland.

According to the State Election Commission (SEC), nominations were filed from four out of six districts under the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) – Kiphire, Longleng, Mon, and Shamator districts. However, there were none in Tuensang and Noklak.

In May, the ENPO reaffirmed its decision to abstain from participating in the upcoming ULB elections in Nagaland, scheduled for June 26. This decision was based on the Chenmoho Resolution passed on February 23, 2024, declaring that until the organisation’s demands regarding the Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT) are finalised, it will not participate in any state or union elections.

As per the SEC’s 'Status of Nomination' as of 3 PM on June 11, a total of 61 candidates had filed nominations comprising  of 21 candidates from three town councils under the Mon; 13 in Longleng, 19 in Shamator, and 8 Kiphire districts.

Meanwhile, a 'summon letter' issued by the office of Konyak Union (KU) dated June 11 was shared on social media platforms, calling the candidates and ward councils and student units to the KU office for a 'meeting' at 11 am, June 11, following the reports of nominations from the districts.

In Longleng, a letter purportedly written by the Phom Students’ Conference to intending candidates, 11 Ward Chairmen, and 11 Ward Women Presidents, was shared informing them to attend a meeting at the office on June 11.

Later, a letter showing the withdrawal of 13 candidates was shared on social media.

Earlier, a 'resignation' letter of Phom People’s Council President over taking moral responsibility for the nominations was shared on social media.

There were also reports that some candidates in Shamator had withdrawn their candidature.

However, these letters could not be independently verified by The Morung Express.

Such reports will be officially confirmed after the date of withdrawal of candidates on June 20.

ENPO’s Emergency Notification
In light of the various developments, the ENPO issued an 'Emergency Notification' on Tuesday, directing all citizens of Eastern Nagaland to remain calm and maintain peace and tranquillity.

Furthermore, in consultation with the Tribal Councils, the ENPO informed its CEC meeting and General Session scheduled for June 13 and 14 have been postponed until further notice.

“While appreciating other intending ULB candidates who did not file nomination, are further urged to remain calm for the cause of our movement,” the notification read.

The ENPO also urged all the Tribal Councils to deal with the situation very cautiously to avoid any misunderstanding and confrontation. By adhering to these directives, we can ensure stability and unity during this period, it added.
