Marking a historic beginning in its political endeavor, the United Naga Democratic Party was formally launched at Wokha. While pointing out that the formation of the party is timely and favourable to the present political pulses and aspirations of the people, T.A. Ngullie, founder and advisor of the party said that UNDP is here to provide the best alternative government after the next general elections. He said it is never too late to start a party as the people will decide and stated that UNDP has the sympathy of all sections of the people.
While lamenting that ‘money power’ is an undeniable fact in Nagaland elections, he said, the people will vote for UNDP because it is working for the unity and peace of the people. While stressing that the unity of all Nagas is the aim of the party, he said this will make a bigger state with more economic power. He further added that it is not difficult to have an independent nation as it is up to the people if they are really determined.
While pointing out that the root cause of the violence in the state is due to disunity amongst different groups, T.A.Ngullie said the UNDP is working and will work hard for the unity of the Nagas but, he added, “the unity of the people is very important but the unity of the underground factions is also more important at this juncture.” Therefore, he added, the need of the hour is peaceful reconciliation and unity amongst the Naga brothers in letter and spirit, which he added, is far more important than any individual desire and interest.
The vexed Naga political issue have gotten more complex because of the unintentional neglect, lack of adequate sincerity and honest approaches made by the people and the insufficiency on the part of the leaders to make a breakthrough in the present deadlock has put the desire in them “to start a new, fresh and with more vigorous and honest approaches with positive outlooks and clarity as all the groups are positive towards peaceful initiatives and settlements. The UNDP will stand firmly for ushering in peace in all parts of the land through unity amongst us.”
He observed that “uniting all Nagas under one roof is in the lips of every Nagas.” He stated that the time had come where the Naga problems need to be solved in any way. “Enough is enough. There is no more blood to be shed, there is no more food to spare for others by the farmers” said T.A. Ngullie.
While expecting to put up at least 20 candidates in the coming general elections, T.A. Ngulllie, expressed his hope that 10 candidates would be successful. He has also left the door open for alliance from any political parties. He said “in forming alliance, we are leaving an ‘open-door policy’ but the alliance party should accept and acknowledge the programmes, policies and principles of UNDP.”
O. Mozamo, Convenor UNDP said that the policy of the UNDP “is to provide stable government and transparent governance to the people with a clear and serious objective to undertake all round development in different ways and in larger magnitude.” While expecting another coalition government in Nagaland, he said that the UNDP will play a very crucial role in forming the next government.
Stressing on the ongoing internal rumbling within the ruling coalition of DAN, he said the understanding amongst the DAN coalition partner is in discord. “The inability of the opposition Congress to bank on the prevailing political unrest within ruling the DAN government is ‘also as well-exposed to the spectator.’
Talking of the upcoming general elections in 2008, Mozamo said that the ‘downsizing’ has, infact led the people to elect capable leaders who can efficiently discharge the duties and deliver the good to the people. He expressed his confidence on the UNDP that it will muster the requisite support of other like minded people and leaders too. Shifting importance from the party to the people, Mozamo said that the UNDP is a platform for a united Naga and further added that political parties are not important but the development and welfare of the people and the unity and peace of the Nagas.
