United Front, Manipur (UFM) on Sunday expressed concerns over the "silence" maintained by the Government of India and other south Asian nations with regard to the situation in Myanmar.

The UFM is a conglomeration of four political parties—Republican Party of India-A, Manipur State Committee; Democratic Bharatiya Samaj Party; Hindustan Janta Party, Manipur State and Akhil Bharatiya Hind Kranti Party (ABHKP).

Addressing a press conference at Manipur Press Club, Imphal, the UFM condemned the United Nations for allegedly remaining a ‘silent spectator’ even as civilians including women and children were made to suffer as a result of military’s violent crackdowns in Myanmar.

UFM Chairperson Sapam Samugou stated that the silence of powerful countries like India and other south Asian countries and the UN were a sign of “cowardice,” and said that, “The atrocities meted out by the military junta in the neighbouring country is against international law.”

“It is a very unfortunate thing and UFM strongly condemns the atrocities meted out by the military junta against the civilians,” he further said, and demanded for the immediate restoration of democracy in the neighbouring country.
