Dimapur | October 9
Zeliangrong civil society organisations (CSO) has put on hold the proposed agitation, which was scheduled to start on October 9, in protest against the unsolved April 9 Pimla murder case.
A 35 year-old woman was found dead in a suspected case of rape and murder in the incident. Six months later, justice remains at bay, while 5 individuals arrested by the police in the subsequent investigation have obtained bail.
The Zeliangrong Youth Organisation Nagaland (ZYON) made the announcement in Dimapur on October 9 following a meeting with the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur. ZYON President R John Zeliang told at a media briefing that in their meeting with the CP, they were informed on the latest development in the investigation.
He said that, according to the CP, the FSL report has returned and the investigating officer has submitted it to court on October 7. Based on this development, and as requested by the government authorities, he said that the CSOs have decided to keep in abeyance the agitation, which was to start on October 9.
“We will wait atleast till the first court hearing and keep in abeyance the proposed agitation,” he said. However, it came with a cautioning, “If the first court hearing is not up to our expectation, then as decided we will resume the agitation.”
Earlier, on September 30, the ZYON, together with other Zeliangrong CSOs, warned of an intensified agitation in Peren district, beginning October 9, if the police fail to bring closure to the unsolved case.
This was preceded by a public demonstration on August 25, in which, the ZYON, Zeliangrong Students' Union Nagaland and Zeliangrong Mipui Organisation, supported by other organisations, had submitted a representation to the government containing three demands. It included fast-tracking the delivery of the case’s forensic report, declaration of the identities of the accused individuals, and establishment of a forensic laboratory in Nagaland by the state government.
