Zheito Chophy
Former Candidate LJP (Ram Vilas) 36 A/C, Satakha Zunheboto
Zheito Chophy, former candidate from 36 A/C Satakha under the banner of UP (RV), has raised grave concerns over the deplorable state of the roads in Dimapur’s main city. Particularly alarming are the routes stretching from Dhobinala to GS Road, Marwari Pati, M P Road, and from Rail Station to Blue Hill and Dhobinala to Thahekhu road (Hokishe Sema Road) which have been left in severe disrepair for an extended period, posing significant challenges to the general public.
These key arteries serve as vital lifelines for Dimapur’s transportation network. However, their current state, riddled with potholes, uneven surfaces, and frequent waterlogging during the rainy season, has become a major source of daily inconvenience and a growing safety hazard for commuters. The worsening conditions have led to increased wear and tear on vehicles, frequent traffic jams, and an overall decline in the city’s infrastructure.
As the commercial and economic heart of Nagaland, Dimapur deserves better infrastructure that reflects its vital role in the state. Yet, the neglect of these important routes is a stark reminder of the urgent need for better management and investment in the city’s public works. Chophy urges the elected representatives of Dimapur I and Dimapur II constituencies to hold the concerned authorities accountable and to ensure that immediate steps are taken to repair and upgrade these critical roads. The safety, comfort, and well-being of the residents cannot be compromised any longer.
In this regard, several critical perspectives need to be emphasized to the political leadership of Nagaland:
1. Sustainable Development for Long-Term Growth: Investing in sustainable infrastructure is essential for Dimapur’s future. Durable road materials and improved drainage systems will not only reduce the frequency of repairs but also contribute to environmental sustainability by minimizing fuel wastage caused by traffic jams and wear-and-tear on vehicles. This proactive approach will save the government substantial resources in the long run.
2. Inclusive Development for Equitable Growth: Well-maintained roads benefit the entire population, from daily wage workers and small business owners to rural traders relying on access to Dimapur’s markets. By improving transportation infrastructure, Dimapur can become a catalyst for rural economic growth, promoting equitable development across Nagaland.
3. Strategic Importance for Nagaland’s Economy: As Nagaland’s primary commercial hub, Dimapur’s infrastructure is vital not only for the local economy but for the state’s overall economic and political image. Dilapidated roads hinder trade, tourism, and investment. Well-maintained infrastructure will project Nagaland as a progressive, investor-friendly state, attracting more opportunities for development.
4. Public Health and Safety: Poor road conditions pose significant health risks, from accidents caused by potholes to respiratory issues due to dust. The strain on emergency services, caused by delayed responses, must also be addressed. Improving road conditions is a public health imperative, not just a transportation issue.
5. Engaging Youth and Holding Leaders Accountable: The involvement of young people and community leaders in monitoring and reporting infrastructure issues can ensure greater accountability. Engaging local communities in development efforts will encourage transparency and foster a culture of responsibility among elected leaders.
6. Leveraging Technology for Better Governance: The use of modern technologies such as GPS mapping to monitor road conditions and data-driven project management systems can streamline repairs and maintenance. By adopting these innovations, political leaders can set an example of tech-driven governance, ensuring timely and efficient road upgrades.
Dimapur’s vibrant economy relies on efficient and well-maintained infrastructure. Poor road conditions not only hinder daily commuting but also negatively impact businesses, emergency services, and the overall image of the city. The district administration, Public Works Department (PWD), and all relevant authorities must prioritize these repairs to restore normalcy and ensure the city’s continued growth and development. We firmly believe that a proactive and timely response to this pressing issue will alleviate the hardships faced by the people of Dimapur and reflect a commitment to the city’s long-term prosperity. Immediate intervention is essential for safeguarding the future of Dimapur as Nagaland’s leading commercial hub.
