DIMAPUR, AUGUST 22 (MExN): A seminar and roadshow focused on higher education and career opportunities in the United States were organized by YRGCARE in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy, Kolkata, and the North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), Chümoukedima. The event took place on August 22 at Bishop Abraham Memorial Cultural Hall, drawing students eager to learn about academic opportunities abroad.
Moderated by Tshekukhro-u Akami, an MSW 3rd-semester student, the seminar began with a welcome address by Rev. Fr. G. L. Khing, Vice Principal, and Administrator at NEISSR. Dr. Fr. C.P. Anto delivered the keynote speech, encouraging students to pursue higher education in the U.S. and highlighting the supportive peace communities that contribute to an enriching international student experience.
Aishwarya Mondal, representing the U.S. Embassy in Kolkata, gave a comprehensive presentation on the U.S. student mobility program in the North East region of India. She emphasized the importance of English proficiency for academic success and social integration in U.S. institutions and discussed strategic planning for studying abroad. Ms. Mondal introduced various tools and resources to aid students in improving their English skills and preparing for the rigorous academic environment in the U.S., particularly focusing on resources tailored to the needs of North East students.
Megha Roy, another U.S. Embassy official, detailed the scholarship programs available to Indian students, including the Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship and the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (UGRAD). She provided practical advice on scholarship applications, urging students to apply early and emphasize unique personal experiences in their submissions.
Sandhya Krishnan from YRGCARE shared insights into the student mobility program, noting that while over 900,000 Indian students have participated, only a small number are from the North East due to information gaps. She discussed YRGCARE's efforts to address these challenges and improve accessibility for students from the region.
The seminar concluded with a discussion session, where students interacted with the resource persons, followed by a vote of thanks from Dr. Fr. Robin Thomas, Academic Dean at NEISSR.
