VC questions states’ examination & evaluation system

Dimapur, December 13 (MExN):  Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University, Professor K Kannan today said the examination and evaluation systems of Nagaland is the biggest worrying factor since the Naga students cannot make into good colleges and institutions due to strict evaluation system. He was speaking as chief guest at the 15th Scholastic Day of Tetso College at its college premises, 5th Mile in Dimapur.

Maintaining that Naga students are talented, he said Naga students cannot make into professional courses due to less percentage in comparison with students of other states. However, he said to meet the criterion, a bridge course has been planned so that the students can get into engineering institute in Dimapur, despite less percentage. “Why our children are evaluated so strictly,” he questioned.

Referring to the major problem of Naga students, he said Naga students have talents but they neither express their feeling nor respond to the lectures of the teachers. Reacting to the practice of going outside of the state to pursue further academic career, the Professor questioned why our children are going outside and why cannot we create good atmosphere here. “No one is worried about it,” he pointed out and added that the parents are spending so much of money on their children. “Contribute to the development of Nagaland and do not run out of Nagaland,” he appealed to the students and parents, as well.

Talking about the role of under paid teachers of the private institutions, Kannan said the teachers of private institutions are not paid well and when they try to raise the issue, they are threatened by the management. He continued that it is an input and output system and added that the best salaries should be given to teachers so that they will impart quality education to the students. He maintained that education is the strong force for development and through education we can change the face of Nagaland.

Enunciating about his role as the VC of NU, Kannan said as a VC of NU, he worked under most hostile environment in his life, despite undertaking many developmental activities for the university. He continued that to know ground reality he even take classes.

Maintaining that vacation is more important than presence in the offices, he said it is impossible to catch people during festive season. He continued that no one complains about such negligence but rather people expect quality education despite such problems. “Are people coming to collect only salaries,” he questioned. He strongly felt that people have to provide the students the environment, where they can excel.

Appealing to the Naga students to rise up, Kannan said make sure that your classes run for 8 hours a day and make sure that your teachers are giving good lectures. He maintained that quality education is your birth right and continued that as a youth you must stand up. “All of us need to build this place,” he said, adding, “Running to other places will not solve the problem.” “With education comes development and with development comes peace,” he concluded.

Earlier, the programme was presided over by Alibo Achumi. Inaholi Shohe invoked God’s blessings while Dr. PS Lorin, principal of the college gave welcome address.
