Village Animal Health Worker for Kohima district at the training program on pig rearing.
Kohima, June 13 (MExN): The Village Animal Health Worker (VAHW) training programme for Kohima district was conducted on June 3 and 4 last by NEPED-NRTT at Integrated Extension Training Centre (IETC) and All India Coordinated and Research Project on Pig (AICRP on Pig), Medziphima. Health workers from 16 project villages attended the program and were benefited on pig rearing with certificates distributed to all the trainees. Tokhunu Semy from Nsunyu and Ravolie Sogotsu from Kohima Village were awarded as the best participants.
The resource persons were Dr. Ithika Swu, Deputy Project Director, SAMETI, Medziphema, Dr. Riisalie Nakhro, Junior Research fellowship, AICRP on Pig, NU SASRD Medziphima, Dr. Catherine Rutsa, Project in-charge AICRP on Pig, NU,SASRD Medziphima and Dr. Gwazenlo Tep.
The theory class, with 1st session was taken by Dr. Gwazenlo Tep where he gave talk on Care & Management of pigs and Vaccination schedules such advantage of rearing Pig, Location of shed/pig sty, Proper diet of feeding, Management of boar, Signs of farrowing and Piglet management. During 2nd session, Dr. Ithika Swu dwelt on Prevention & control of diseases, administration of medicines, restraining, some common drugs, labeling. The 3rd Session was on Feeding, vaccination, control and prevention of diseases, location of shed (sty) segregation of healthy and weak pigs, and proper disposal of death pigs.
The practical classes were demonstrated by Dr. Catherine Rutsa and Dr. Riisalie Nakhro , with the trainees were taught upon the treatment of skin infection and wounds Castration, Vaccination, Ear tagging for identification, Sanitation and disinfection of pig pens (foot bath, preparation & dilution of disinfectant)Eyes and ears infection- care & management. Prof. V.B Sharma said that the best benefit of attending training is when you put that into practice and stated “When you go back improve yourself, self-improvement is the key to reach to your people, then eventually your community will learn from the changes and the improvement they see in you”.
In her introductory speech Shuyhunle Nyenthong, Kohima district in charge, NEPED-NRTT gave a brief introduction on NEPED-NRTT’s vision, objectives, goals and role & responsibilities of animal health workers. She said that the consumption of pig in Nagaland and highlighted the benefits of rearing pig which could benefit the economy of the Village community and earn a livelihood through self-sustaining, learn to eliminate disease, reduce sickness and lowering health care cost. She also thanked the resource person for their commitment and dedication in conducting the training. Earlier the program was chaired by Dr. Atouzo Pienyu, (SMS NEPED-NRTT).
The participants who attended the training expressed gratitude to that NEPED-NRTT and AICRP on Pig, Medziphima for the conducting the much needed training on pig rearing, adding it was an eye opener to know how to give vaccinations, castrations and differentiate their sickness and feeding. They felt that pig rearing could earn a livelihood and usurp boost the state’s economy.
