There was the story of villagers uniting to crowd-source fund to resume building an abandoned half-done bridge over the Chathe River in Dimapur district in 2017. Some three years later, in a remote part of Peren district, a similar initiative took shape this month with villagers coming together to repair a neglected road.

The road in question is part of the larger Tening-Lekie Road, which is virtually forgotten to the powers that be.
The initiative was taken by the Nsong Area Frontal Organization to repair the Tening Zero point-Ngam village segment of the Tening-Lekie Road. After Tening, this road passes through the villages of Nsong, Nchan, Ngam, Lalong, Nzauna, Old Ngaulong before linking up with Lekie in Dima Hasao, Assam and with the famous ‘People’s Road’ in Tamenlong district, Manipur.

It started on January 11 and culminated on January 19.

The length of the road repaired ran for 31km covering Nsong, Nchan and Ngam villages. “With the fund collected from free-will donations, the volunteers cleared jungle, repaired drainage, built drains where required, dumped gravel to level the road,” said Aakam Pame, a student leader, who assisted in mobilizing volunteers and fund for the initiative.

The donors included churches, village councils, youth and student bodies, besides individuals, he added.

The total fund collected amounted to over Rs 4.5 lakhs.

According to him, the Assam Rifles’ post at Tening also sent its volunteers to assist in the repair initiative for one day, while state PWD personnel joined the work for a few days.
