WAD condemns alleged rape & murder of minor

Imphal, September 3 (MExN): The Women Action For Development (WAD) on Thursday condemned the alleged gang rape of a 14 year old minor in Imphal.

The girl was reported missing on September 1 and found in an unconscious condition at a roadside pond at Mayang, Imphal on September 2, according to the WAD press statement.

The girl was suspected to have been gang raped and was left to die the night before. She was found by some women and was rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, the girl succumbed to her injuries and died in the ICU today afternoon, the WAD informed.

While condemning the increasing acts of crime against women in Manipur, the WAD said that “Amidst the pandemic, the gendered effects on women have increased significantly.” 

The WAD further claimed that “The degree of brutality committed to women cannot be simply committed by ordinary citizens.”

Voicing its concern, WAD appealed to the government of Manipur to form an independent, impartial investigation team to initiate investigation of crime against women, especially rape and murder, domestic violence, women trafficking etc.

WAD urged the government to urgently arrest the perpetrators involved in such heinous crimes and charge-sheet to be submitted for speedy trial for deliverance of justice for the victim's family.

WAD offered its condolence to the family and expressed solidarity with all the families and victims of violence against women. It also appealed to the people of Manipur to unite and safeguard women.
