Hebron Higher Secondary School, Sovima observed its 25th foundation anniversary on October 14. The celebration had Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) Neiphiu Rio as the chief guest.
In his address, Rio recalled how the school has grown despite challenges. According to him, funding for the school had been a major challenge over the years but it was heartening to note that it has sustained to become what is today. Terming it as the result of collective effort, he added, “The credit for this goes to everyone associated with the school since, including the students who committed to excel.”
He recalled that at the time (1991-92) when the school started, Sovima was considered rather remote with hardly any educational institutions. Stating that the transformation since then has been exceptional, he said as the school grew over the years, Sovima and its surrounding areas has witnessed the opening of several other schools and colleges and which could well be a sign of it turning into a centre of education. On that note he said, “We should make the area peaceful and welcoming.”
Stating that education at the primary level is one area which requires utmost attention, he said that here greater parent-teacher coordination would certainly aid the development of a child. “We may not be able to change the system as a whole but we can certainly make a difference.”
While taking note of the progress the school has made, he added that it requires more infrastructure and student amenities for furthering its objective. The students and faculty should also “re-commit to be better,” he said, while challenging the governing body of the school to do more to leave an enduring legacy worthwhile.
Sapralu Nyekha, a parent, in her address said that while one of the greatest gifts parents can give their children is education, institutions like Hebron Higher Secondary School is a gift to the society.
Mechehonuo Tase, an alumnus of the school said that co-curricular activities encouraged at the school in tandem with academics have had a lasting impression on her and other students. “Nobody can go to the past and start a new beginning. But each one of us can start a new beginning today.”
