IN A WAY of redefining values and principles underlining our relationship with the Earth, the department of Justice and Law today undertook massive plantation of trees at the Kohima High Court site. Taking up the plantation work, Yitachu, the Parliamentary Secretary for justice and law, said there had been much negligence regarding protecting forests in the state by our cultural and customary practices.

In the process of our developmental activities, he said, areas to protect our forest had not been properly planned. “We have destroyed it; we have the responsibility,” he said. Emphasising the threat of global warming to mankind, and terming the present plantation as “seed of justice”, Yitachu said, “This is a small plantation we are taking up but it should reach out to many villages.” He said the present site is the place where the “most crucial issues are to be decided”.

“By this plantation we are doing justice to the earth and people to show trees are a must not only as a decoration, but a necessity for mankind/livelihood,” he maintained. He further called for taking it up as a challenge and to spread the plantation activity everywhere. The Parliamentary Secretary stressed on having clarity of mindset on any issue confronting society, especially by the youths.

A dedicatory prayer was offered by K T Koza, Additional Secretary for justice and law. The plantation work was also assisted by the Nagaland People’s Front (NPF) youth wing. Huge number of erosion control plants, pines, flower and fruit bearing tree saplings were planted around the site.
