Single teacher for primary school, ‘carpentry instructor’ headmaster in middle school
DIMAPUR, JUNE 14 (MExN): A classic example of the functioning of a school in Nagaland with ghost teachers is the Government Primary School in Kiphire district’s Seyochung Village, according to a student body.
The Seyochung Area Students’ Union (SASU) undertook an educational tour from May 29-31 last to study the grievances faced in the area, especially in the field of education. They, along with a medical team, visited ten government schools in the area to encourage students and the teachers.
To their utter surprise, they found the Seyochung Village Government Primary School deserted and not functioning due to the shortage of teachers. Only a single teacher was found to be in station.
“Many teachers have been transferred and no reliever has been made by the government for the GPS Seyochung Village,” a representation made by the SASU to the director of school education states.
An even more bizarre discovery made by the students was the handling of the headmaster’s post in the government middle school of the village by the ‘carpentry instructor’, “which is shameful to our Naga society.”
The SASU contends that no replacement was made after the previous headmaster was transferred.
The presence of only one science master, a Hindi teacher and a graduate teacher is also said to be causing a stumbling block in the resumption of classes, after summer holidays were declared before first terminal examinations were conducted. For the very reason of shortage of teachers, admission seekers are also in the minimum, the student body says.
The union had earlier submitted a number of complaints and representations to the District Inspector of Schools, Kiphire and other higher-ups for immediate deployment of teachers “but no steps have been taken” to date.
The SASU has thus made another appeal to authorities concerned to deploy the required number of teachers in the area. Otherwise, it has threatened to take its own course of action.
