Where Power Lies

Kahuto Chishi Sumi

Every government, association or organisation derives its power from the people they govern or hold authority over. If the people are dissatisfied over the performance of those that govern them, the right to remove them from their offices of authority lies with the people and the laws they subscribe to. The problem in Nagaland is that we have so many tribes, clans and villages that the people in power have no problem dividing us to rule over us. And we stupid Nagas follow Lucifer’s philosophy that, “This better to rule in Hell than to serve in Heaven” (John Milton: - Paradise Lost); so we are happy to put up with our bad roads, irregular electricity, collapsing bridges et al, just so that we can boast that the Chief Minister/Minister/Parliamentary Secretary/Officer/President belongs to our family/village/clan/range/tribe. We boast of them in the Hell that Nagaland has become.

Be that as it may, our MLAs have purchased their way into power by subverting the letter and spirit of the Law through the Electoral Process, our Officers have obtained their offices through the front and back doors and the Presidents of our Tribal Organisations have attained their offices according to the rules and regulations of our respective tribes. But I wonder at the Naga Council, Dimapur. I put the following questions to the present Members of the NCD.

1. I believe in the right of every man to take any decision on any matter that he pleases; but what gave you the right to issue the statement that you would not be attending the Rally called for by ACAUT, using your offices as members of the NCD? Your individual sentiments should be expressed under your individual names. Using your offices as members of the NCD has given the totally wrong impression that the Nagas of Dimapur are against the Rally call of ACAUT But the reality is that you seem to be the only ones against it.

2. As, supposedly, responsible members of a respectable organisation, it is incumbent upon you to explain any position you take on any issue. You have been elected/selected to the NCD to look out for and to the welfare of the Nagas of Dimapur, in particular, and all people of Dimapur in general. You are not the owners of the Nagas of Dimapur nor of Dimapur Town that you can issue cryptic statements using the good name of the Nagas and Dimapur Town inherent in the nomenclature, “Naga Council, Dimapur”

There are many corrupted people and organisations that are against all that ACAUT stands for; but they are intelligent enough to maintain silence on the issue of the proposed Rally. Your statement on it has opened you up to the judgement of the People of Nagaland, they have measured you by different standards, you have been weighed, you have been measured and you are found wanting; you have fallen far short of all the standards necessary for Honesty, Probity and Decency required of any Civilised Society. You may hang yourselves or hang your heads in shame for all we care. Nagaland has no use for Dinosaurs of Arrogance like you.
