Dimapur | July 6
Persistent rainfall continues to drench Nagaland, with forecasts of more intense showers and possible flash floods in the coming days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has attributed the wet spell to an upper air cyclonic circulation hovering over Nagaland and adjoining Myanmar, extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level.
As heavy to very heavy rainfall lashed parts of the state, the national weather agency has issued alerts for continued downpours and thunderstorms, raising concerns over waterlogging, landslides, and flash floods across vulnerable districts.
According to an IMD weather bulletin issued at 8 PM on July 6, light to moderate rainfall occurred at most places across Nagaland, with isolated heavy rainfall recorded in some parts on Sunday.
Between 8:30 AM of July 5 and 8:30 AM of July 6, Mokokchung district registered 9 cm of rain, one of the highest readings from the region, another IMD bulletin informed.
Meanwhile, in the seven-day rainfall forecast, the IMD forecast continued thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning and intense downpours, with the likelihood of ‘very heavy rainfall’ particularly on July 12 at isolated places in Nagaland.
During the period from July 7–12, the IMD predicted ‘heavy rainfall very likely’ at isolated places across Nagaland, except on July 11.
Thunderstorms with lightning are expected at isolated places throughout the forecast period.
Meanwhile, a flash flood risk outlook valid until 5:30 PM on July 7 has been issued for multiple districts in Nagaland. The districts under watch include: Dimapur, Kiphire, Kohima, Longleng, Mokokchung, Mon, Peren, Phek, Wokha, and Zunheboto.
