The Wildlife Division Kiphire today celebrated Wildlife Week cum Human Animal Conflict awareness programme at the Hopongkyu Memorial Hall with Dr. Tinojungshi Chang, ADC, Kiphire gracing the occasion as chief guest. The event was attended by Eco Club members of the school and NGOs.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Tino said that conservation is everybody’s concern and until we come together, an individual or a village alone cannot be successful. He said that in Nagaland, if conservation work is initiated by the department, the land owners demand grade IV post or government work which makes the work failure.
He called upon the student present to disseminate the information of conservation in ones homes and schools. Samom Khelen Singh, IFS Wildlife Warden Kiphire who gave a keynote address said that nature is very rich but there is conflict due to increase human population. He added that hunting cannot be banned by the department but has to come out from the minds of the people only then it will be effective.
Sharing the problem faced by the department, the Wildlife Warden also said that the state government has not enough fund to compensate the damage caused by the wild life which also cause more problem in human animal conflict issue.
Lansothung Lotha, RFO, who spoke on the topic ‘Conflict- Coexistence’ touched on the various aspects of why there is conflict between human and animals and also asked the gathering to ponder and question oneself whether we are doing justice to the nature who provide everything for us.
He also asked the students to insist the parents to let them see the animals and the wildlife that they have seen in their life time so that elders will give a thought of conservation. Speaking on a campaign note, Hongba Phom, from Finger Print said that algae and bees which seems to be the tiniest creature, which we hardly notice, is doing a commendable job for all of us and if there is no bees and algae the oxygen we breath will be a problem. He also added that if there is no bees in just four years time, the entire world will be wiped out of starvation because there will be no fertilization and pollination. He also asked the people to take care of environment so as to make the living a very healthy life.
Vincent Belho, from Castle Group while chairing the programme said that Kiphire is one of the best places for tourism with abundant wild life and scenery and said, “We all have to preserve these rich resources as it belongs to all of us.” Agape School Eco Club performed a play on the title ‘save mother nature’s greatest treasure.’
The programme was followed by documentary screening and lunch.
