Will carry on with our war on drugs: TASU

Days after the death of a student leader of Tizit Area Students Union (TASU), Ahoa Konyak, who was killed by an alleged drug-peddler in Mon district’s Tizit town during an anti-drug inspection drive, the student body has reiterated that its war on drugs campaign will carry on until the menace has been fully eradicated from its society.

An official from TASU stated that drug culture has been a recurring problem faced by the community at large. Due to which thievery and other anti-social activities has gotten out of hand. “It has drastically affected both young and old alike,” the official said.

The drug problem in Tizit sparked wide public outrage when on May 25 one of the student body’s leader was hacked to death by an alleged drug peddler, Menshan Konyak when they went to inspect his house. The accused is currently under police custody.  “Although the act is condemnable and we believe that the law will take its own course of action, the main culprit behind this is the drug itself,” the official observed.

The funeral service of late Ahoa Konyak was held on May 26, attended by members of TASU and other civil society organisations.

Tizit is a small town, located at the foothills of Mon district. It also serves as the main artery line transporting goods and people across the district.

The TASU official also made known the fact that the porous border and Tizit town lying in close proximity to Assam has made it a fertile ground for drug smugglers to travel in and out of the district unrestricted. “Although the police undertake routine checking, we feel that they have not done a satisfactory job at curbing drug trade,” the official opined, adding that most of the drugs are smuggled into Tizit from Namtola, located towards Assam.

He also revealed that ‘Sunflower drug’ was the most common street drug found in the area. “Many people have become hooked to it and we estimate that at least one or two drug users can be found in each household of every village,” he said.

With the drug menace getting out of hand, the student body has reaffirmed its resolve to press on with its anti-drug campaign with renewed vigour even in the days to come.
