Wokha: 18 villages attend workshop on beekeeping

Wokha, March 31 (MExN): Wokha Forest Division conducted a workshop on beekeeping at the Community Hall, Forest Colony, Wokha on March 31. 

The programme, under the aegis of National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS), Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Government of India, was organised in convergence with the Nagaland Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM). The programme was attended by over a hundred participants from 18 villages in and around Wokha. Participants were from the JFMCs, SHGs as well as public.

The resource persons were Nzanbemo K Lotha, Apiculture Officer & Team Member NBHM and Mhathung Tsopoe, Horticulture Officer & Team Member NBHM. Mhathung Tsopoe gave the introduction and deliberated on the pollination role of bees in the environment, and focussed on why to participate in beekeeping. Nzanbemo K Lotha spoke on the method for swarming and also the quality of honey and its uses. He also emphasised on the methods for processing and storing of honey. 

Renphamo Murry from N Longidang village demonstrated on the practical aspects of beekeeping. As a past trainee of beekeeping course conducted by Wokha Forest Division through the Green Skill Development Program, he also gave a testimonial on how beekeeping has helped him secure an alternate livelihood option. 

During the inaugural session, Suman WM Sivachar, IFS, DFO Wokha Forest Div, enlightened the gathering on beekeeping during his keynote address. Siechutho Katiry, ACF, Wokha Forest Div, welcomed the gathering. Flyers on beekeeping were distributed to all the participants.
