Wokha dist village council chairmen accuse SSB of assaulting public

Wokha, November 29 (MExN): The Wokha District Village Council Chairman Association (WDVCCA) today accused the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) – one of India’s Central Armed Police Forces – stationed in the border areas of Nagaland and Assam of assaulting the public residing in the border areas “without any rhyme and reason.” In a press statement, the Association condemned the SSB’s actions.

WDVCCA alleged that in the past non-Nagas were engaged by SSB to burgle logs of the Village Council Chairman of Soshan village, while the family members of Chandalashung New Council Chairman were also assaulted “creating unnecessary tension without any reason and the matter was settled amicably through the initiative of the adhoc commandant of SSB Assam.”

Despite all these “untold sufferings”, it said, “we tried to maintain peaceful atmosphere without any reaction from our side, but to our dismay, recently, again the same neutral force (i.e. SSB) have beaten the youths of Yanpha Village from under its jurisdiction.” On getting the information, the Village Council Chairman of Yanpha Village, M. Nlumbemo Humtsoe, who is also the advisor of the WDVCCA, went to inquire about the incident, “but he was also beaten up and assaulted by the SSB for no reason which is unaccepted by the association,” it added.

Stating that the neutral force (any) is meant to protect the public and not use force upon them, WDVCCA lamented that “the action/force taken up by the SSB at present scenario is too much.”

It questioned, “How can they (neutral force) protect the public if they go beyond to the extent of assaulting the Village Council Chairman (also advisor WDVCCA). This indicates that the lives of the general public are of no value for them.”

Therefore, WDVCCA condemned the actions of SSB taken upon the Village Council Chairmen on three occasions so far.

The statement was appended by WDVCCA President Myingthungo Odyuo, General Secretary Zayio Ezung, Joint Secretary Shanthungo Yanthan, and Treasurer Renphamo Yanthan.
