The inaugural Wokha District Futsal Championship 2026 commenced at Arena X, Airfield Colony, Wokha Town, on May 29, with 14 teams competing for the district title and a berth in the state championship.
Organised by the Wokha District Football Association (WDFA), the tournament marks the district’s first organised futsal championship under the directive of the Nagaland Football Association (NFA).
The eventual champions will represent Wokha district at the 5th Nagaland Futsal Club Championship (NFCC) 2026, scheduled to be hosted by the Football Association of Tseminyu District in June.
The championship was formally inaugurated by President of the Wokha District Sports Association (WDSA), Yanrenthung Humtsoe, who attended the opening ceremony as the special guest.
Addressing players and officials, Humtsoe described futsal as one of the fastest-growing formats of football and acknowledged its role in promoting the sport across Nagaland and India.
Highlighting the steady rise of football talent in Wokha district, he encouraged players to remain committed and disciplined in their sporting careers. He also urged athletes to stay away from intoxication and unhealthy habits that could affect their performance and future prospects.
Calling for greater support from stakeholders and spectators, Humtsoe said sports participation and discipline have the potential to positively shape society while strengthening unity and relationships within communities.
He further urged participating teams to uphold fair play and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
Earlier, an invocation was pronounced by Robolo Shitiri, CCM of St Paul’s Parish, Wokha, while WDFA President N Samuel Ezung informed that the district championship was being organised in line with NFA directives to strengthen futsal at the grassroots level.
The tournament was officially declared open with a ceremonial kick-off by the special guest.
