Wokha, July 16 (MExN): Wokha District Task Force held a meeting on July 16 at the DC official chamber to discuss regarding immunization of Rotavirus vaccine which is scheduled to be conduct in the last week of July 2019.
According to a DIPR report, Rotavirus vaccine is a highly contagious virus that causes diarrhea in children which may lead to hospitalization and even death. In India available data shows rotavirus is responsible for nearly 40% of moderate to serve diarrhea in children under 5 years, amounting to 8.72 lakh hospitalization, 32.7 lakh outpatient visit and 78.000 deaths annually.
Apart from the burden of death due to rotavirus diarrhea it can also cause long term nutritional complications and loss of cognitive development potential.
In recognition of the global rotavirus disease burden, world Health Organisation has recommended inclusion of RVV in National Immunization programme of all the countries.
Till date 96 countries have introduced RVV and in India 11 States stared in the 1st phase since 2016. Our State Nagaland is preparing to launch the RVV in the end of July 2019. RVV will be given at 6 weeks, 10 weeks and 14 weeks.
For the successful implementation of the programme Dr. Khelito Zhimomi, DPO UIP/RCH Wokha informed that District level training of all Medical Officers, Programme Officers has already been completed since June 2019.
Block level training for Asha, Anganwadi Workers, FLW, ANMs are also completed. Massive campaign at village level is going on in Village Health & Nutrition Days and other logistic equipments, human resources are kept ready for implementation in the district. Dr.Khelito also informs that to strengthen the campaign house to house survey is also underway.
Deputy Commissioner, Wokha & Chairman District Task Force for Immunization, Dr. Manazir Jeelani Samoon appealed all line departments, stake holders, NGOs, Churches to extend cooperation and support in generating awareness for the success of the campaign. He further informed that District Health Society meeting will be conducted on August 5.
